List of military operations of India
Operation Polo (1948) – Indian armed forces ended the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad and led to the incorporation of the princely state of Hyderabad in Southern India, into the Indian Union.
Operation Vijay (1961) – the operation by the Military of India that led to the capture of Goa, Daman and Diu and Anjidiv Islands from the Portuguese colonial holding in 1961.
Operation Steeplechase(1971)– The operation led by the Indian Army against the Nexalists.
Operation Trident & Operation Python ( 1971)- The offensive operations launched by the Indian Navy on Pakistan’s port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
Operation Bluestar(1984)- An Indian Army operation to flush out rebels from the Sikhism’s holiest shrine in Amritsar.
Operation Woodrose (1984)- A military operation carried out by the Indira Gandhi-led Indian government in the months after Operation Blue Star to “prevent the outbreak of widespread public protest” in the state of Punjab.
Operation Meghdoot (1984) — Indian military’s capture of the majority of Siachen Glacier.
Operation Rajiv (1987)– An Indian Army operation to capture the highest peak in the Siachen area in 1987. The peak was renamed Bana Top in honour of Bana Singh, who was awarded India’s highest military award Param Vir Chakra for his courage.
Operation Pawan (1987) – Operations by the Indian Peace Keeping Force to take control of Jaffna from the LTTE in late 1987 to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord.
Operation Viraat (1988) – It was an anti-insurgency operation launched by the IPKF against the LTTE in April 1988 in Northern Sri Lanka.Operation Trishul (1988) – Along with Operation Viraat, was an anti-insurgency operation launched by the IPKF against the LTTE in April 1988 in Northern Sri Lanka.
Operation Checkmate (1988) – It was an anti-insurgency operation carried out by the IPKF against the LTTE in the Vadamarachi area of northern Sri Lanka in June 1988.
Operation Cactus (1988) — Paracommandos of Indian Army and MARCOS of Indian Navy oust Tamil nationalistmercenaries of PLOTE who instigated a coup in Malé in the Maldives.
Operation Good Samaritan(1995): Under this operation ,the army is involved in goodwill and confidence building activities in Nagaland and in Manipur
Operation Sadbhavana(1998)-Operation Sadbhavana, also referred to as Operation Goodwill has been launched in Jammu and Kashmir by the Indian Army under their Military Civic Action programmes, which are aimed at “Winning the Hearts and Minds” (WHAM) of the people in the region.
Operation Vijay (1999) – name of the successful Indian operation to push back the infiltrators from the Kargil Sector, in the 1999 Kargil War.
Operation Parakram (2001) – Operation Parakram mounted by India in the aftermath of the terror attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001 provides some useful cues.
Operation Sea Waves(2004)– Operation Sea Waves was a disaster relief operation undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Sea Waves was focused on rescue and relief efforts on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Operation Black Tornado/Operation Cyclone ( 2008)- During 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks , Operation Black Tornado, an operation led by NSG to rescue hostages and smoke out terrorists at Taj hotel.
Operation Surya Hope(2013) – For saving people trapped in the 2013 North India floods.
Operation Megh Rahat(2014)- To rescue people in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir.
Operation All Out (2015) – for flushing out Bodo militants Assam
Operation Maitri (2015) -India’s Army-led rescue and relief mission in quake-hit Nepal
Indian counter-insurgency operation in Myanmar(2015) – A cross-border counter-insurgency raid in Myanmar.
Operation Sukoon(2006) – An operation launched by the Indian Navy to evacuate Indian, Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals, as well as Lebanese nationals with Indian spouses, from the conflict zone during the 2006 Lebanon War.
Operation Safe Homecoming(2011): The Indian Armed Forces also launched a similar effort, Operation Safe Homecoming, to bring Indian nationals from Libya during the 2011 Libyan civil war.
Operation Search Light(2014)-The Search Operation Undertaken by Indian Navy to find the missing Boieng 777 M.H 17 Malaysian Flight
Operation Raahat (2015) – Operation by the Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and other foreign nationals from Yemen during the 2015 military intervention by Saudi Arabia and its allies in that country during the Yemeni Crisis.
Operation Sankat Mochan (2016)- An operation of the Indian Air Force in view of 2016 Juba Clashes to evacuate Indian Citizens and other foreign nationals from South Sudan during the South Sudanese Civil War.
Operation Calm Down (2016)-Operation Calm Down was started by the Indian army in Jammu and Kashmir following the aftermath of the death of Burhan Wani in July 2016 which had led to unrest in Kashmir in which more than 90 civilians and 2 security personnel were killed and thousands injured.
Operation Insaniyat (2017)– Humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh on account of influx of refugees.
Operation Nistar (2018) – Operation by the Indian Navy using INS Sunayna to evacuate Indian citizens from Yemen Island of Socotra who were stranded by Cyclone Mekenu.
Operation Madad (2018): Indian Navy’s Operation Madad was for flood-hit Kerala
Operation Sahyog (2018): Indian Army also has launched Operation Sahyog to rescue people in flood-hit Kerala.
Operation Karuna(2018): Operation Karuna to rescue people in flood-hit Kerala launched by Indian Air force.
